Katie Stokes and David Boylan

As I "ramble about" San Diego County, exploring people's perspectives on Edible San Diego and how we can position ourselves as a multi-media platform that connects people with information they need and want about eating and living better, I have been thinking about the different ways this company communicates.

It might be new to most of you that our magazine is part of an international network of Edible publications, including about 90 Edible publications across the US and Canada, with the common mission of celebrating local food, drink and culture in their region. ECI, as we call the national Edible organization, carries out its mission on multiple media platforms, like radio, on video, on the web and social media. The local licenses carry out their artistry through print magazines that are more than holding their own in our changing world - they are thriving - and, of course, through lots of activity online.

I have many ideas for how Edible San Diego can reinvent itself, but you know what? We have a survey out to collect your thoughts. No survey is perfect, but we hope you'll take ours this winter to give us good fodder for our growth this year. We want to be useful to you, so please tell us how.

Speaking of multiple media platforms, a few days ago, I had the opportunity to speak with a person who is a pioneer in several senses. David Boylan has a popular radio feature called Lick the Plate, which airs on FM 94/9, KSON and Sunny 98.1 in San Diego and on 93.9 The River in Detroit. Yes, that's right, Detroit! I love how David keeps ties with family, friends and fans alive and well in two very different regions. He also has a column in The Coast News here in San Diego County. David's unique contribution is to share with all of us some unexpected and memorable insights from folks in all aspects of the food and beverage sectors. Over the past 5 years, he's racked up chats with almost 400 people! The spontaneous and behind-the-scenes feel to Lick the Plate means that whether you're a chef, a foodie, neither, or both, there's something cool to learn about each time you tune in.

David's smile and welcoming manner make it seem easy to straddle multiple cities and media platforms as he connects readers and listeners with food-related insights we can't get anywhere else. Edible San Diego is excited to make friends with David and Lick the Plate because maybe we can collaborate in ways that are exciting for you—San Diego residents and visitors who care about good food and all that it takes to make it.

Meanwhile, next week, I've got some appointments set for this Ramble that will get us on the road again, learning about everything from beneficial bacteria to public television, two entirely relevant topics if you're a food magazine in metamorphosis. #KatiesEdibleRamble #ediblesandiego #YouareInvitedESD #LoyaltoLocalSD
