Join us for three immersion workshops to help you become the urban farmer of your dreams! This three-part educational series will cover a wide range of subjects that will help you get growing successfully. Whether you are a home grower looking to grow healthy, organic food for your family or a budding market grower, this course offers all the information you need to get started.  This course will be taught by owner and founder of San Diego Seed Company and the San Diego Seed Company farm. Brijette’s hands-on experience of growing in San Diego County for 10 years will help you become an expert grower. Save time and money by learning from the mistakes we have made on our farm.

Workshop Details:

Part One: Understanding Seeds Saturday, May 11th

 10:00am-12:00 Lecture

12:00- 1:00pm Potluck

1:00-3:00 pm On-farm workshops

Participants can expect to learn a wide range of information about seeds which are the most important part of our agricultural system. Topics covered are:

  • Understanding seed types
  • How seed plays a vital role in sustainability
  • Seed industry history
  • What you need to know about the worldwide seed situation
  • Starting your plants from seeds
  • Greenhouse creation and  management
  • Plant propagation from cutting

Part Two: Vegetable Production on an Urban Farm Sunday, May 19th

10:00am- 12:00 Lecture

12:00- 1:00pm Potluck

1:00-3:00 pm On-farm workshops

Participants can expect to learn about each step of how to create an urban farm. Topics covered are:

  • Soil building and Soil testing
  • Challenges and solutions for an urban grower
  • Soil food web
  • Irrigation basics
  • Specific tips on growing warm season plants
  • Perennialization
  • Integrated Pest Management

Part Three: Seed Saving and on Farm Breeding Saturday, May 25th

10:00 am-12:00 Lecture

12:00- 1:00pm Potluck

1:00-3:00 pm On-farm workshops

 

Participants will get to delve into the important details about seed saving, breeding, and on-farm seed selection. Topics to be covered are:

  • Getting your plants to produce seeds
  • Basic plant sexual reproduction
  • Pollination/ Cross-pollination
  • Seed saving basics
  • Selection, de-hybridizing and variety maintenance
  • Seed processing and storage
  • How seed saving can change the world
