Where to Eat Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner in Barrio Logan
You’ve probably heard about the burgeoning food scene in Barrio Logan. From craft beer bars to birrieria, the food and drink options in the neighborhood have never been better. Dominique Cancio, local resident and founder of Taste Venture Tours, steered us towards a few new hot spots to enjoy breakfast, lunch, and dinner in one of the most vibrant corners of the city.
Breakfast at El Carrito
For decades, breakfast in Barrio Logan has been synonymous with homestyle Mexican staples at Las Cuatros Milpas—a landmark restaurant that has been filling bellies since the 1930s. The tacos, tamales, and chorizo stew are worth queuing up for.
But, if chilaquiles are what you’re craving, bypass the Las Cuatros line and head straight to El Carrito. The casual spot is located in a restored cable car and offers five different preparations.
The namesake El Carrito chilaquiles are made with creamy salsa poblano, corn, and poblano chile, while the Chicanos feature creamy avocado sauce with Monterey jack cheese and sour cream.
Order the Divorciados to net both flavors on the same plate along with two fried eggs, beans, and rice.
Lunch at Barrio Dogg
The dressed up Black Angus beef links at Barrio Dogg merit multiple visits to gain a full appreciation of the menu.
The can’t-fail options include El Smokey, a Texas barbeque-inspired creation topped with pulled pork, tamarind BBQ sauce, coleslaw, and crunchy fried onions; and the El Samurai, slathered with hoisin BBQ sauce and banh-mi inspired toppings.
Elotitos, the shop’s take on Mexican street corn, is infused with the aromas of BBQ and the cotija cheese and cloud of whipped lime crema make perfect companions.
Dinner at Mish Mash and/or Salud
We couldn’t decide between these two spots, so we ended up at both. We highly recommend you do the same.
Mish Mash has settled into its new home on Newton Avenue where stuffed burgers and sandwiches are the main draw. Try the Medianoche Cuban sandwich, layered with thinly sliced mojo-marinated pork, ham, Swiss cheese and yellow mustard on tender house-baked Cuban bread.
For after-work brews and bites, Salud is a viable option for Chicano-style taco shop staples and refreshing Mexican beer, plus daily specials spanning TJ-style tacos on Mondays to menudo or pozole on the weekend.
Save room for dessert; the churros and ice cream topped with Tajin caramel are the perfect finale.
