Now Open: Scoops Ice Cream and Creperie in La Jolla Shores
Ice cream is having a moment in San Diego. From gelato to soft serve to made-to-order liquid nitrogen creations, there have never been more ways to satisfy a craving for something cool, creamy, and sweet.
Last weekend, La Jolla Shores welcomed their own family-run ice cream parlor, Scoops La Jolla, which opened in a former dry cleaning shop.
Co-owner Nader Abu Hamdan, who operates the shop with his father, explained that he was inspired by the ice cream culture in San Francisco and wanted to bring a similar artisanal experience to the neighborhood.
The busy locale offers 16 different flavors (plus seasonal specials) of Van Leeuwen Artisan Ice Cream, an all-natural variety crafted with hormone and antibiotic-free dairy products in Greenpoint, Brooklyn.
Flavor options include the classics, as well as inventive spins like Earl Grey tea and peanut butter marshmallow crunch.
They also have a wide range of vegan options made with a base of raw cashew milk, organic coconut cream, coconut oil, cocoa butter, and cane sugar. The quality of Van Leeuwen’s vegan flavors was a major reason Nader chooses to carry their ice creams; he was “blown away” by how much the texture mimicked that of regular ice cream.
Of the 18 flavors currently available, eight are vegan-friendly, including enticing options like chocolate chip cookie dough, matcha, and peanut butter and jelly.
As with any ice cream shop, sampling a few flavors before settling on a scoop is highly encouraged. Some early standouts include classic strawberry, which has a refreshingly real flavor profile unmatched by the grocery store brands, and honeycomb; available in both regular and vegan-friendly versions.
In addition to ice cream, the shop serves a selection of sweet crepes, coffee, and espresso beverages crafted with freshly roasted beans from neighboring Bird Rock Coffee Roasters, including cold brew shakes served with a scoop of vanilla ice cream.
