Kettle & Stone, Mission Hills

West Lewis Street in Mission Hills is one of those fabulous little surprises we find sprinkled throughout the county; one turn off of the main drag and you are transported to a quaint block of boutiques, historic homes, and lush canyon views. The resident coffee house, Kettle & Stone, fits right in to the stylish enclave.

The Space

Imagine your chic, California-boho friend's living room, and you have a pretty good idea of what to expect at Kettle & Stone. The owner's uncle is a designer, and it shows in the well-placed driftwood and macramé wall hangings. The interior is packed with intimate two-top tables, while sidewalk seating provides larger tables to accommodate groups of four. The wifi is free and there are electrical outlets along the walls, making it a homey place to get some work done. A well curated selection of artisan home decor, candles, small accessories, and jewelry are peppered temptingly throughout the space.

The Vibe

There is a definite buzz of energy running through the cafe, with people chatting over their lattes, takeaway lines weaving around product displays, and light music playing in the background. It is a pleasant, friendly hum, mimicked by the efficient, friendly staff. Despite the rather large space and towering ceilings, the shop feels cozy and intimate. It's a place you want to linger. The sidewalk seating is pleasantly shaded by mature trees on a block that has plenty of beautiful architecture and foliage to take in.

The Nibbles

The shop offers locally made quiche, fresh baked croissants, Danishes, and muffins, along with gluten-free mini donuts from Pavona Dolci in almond, pistachio, and chocolate glazed flavors.

The Drinks

In addition to classic espresso drinks, whole leaf teas and tea lattes, and both hot and cold brewed coffees, they have an entire lineup of specialty coffees that range from dark chocolate and Mexican-style mochas to seasonal offerings that have run the gamut from honey lavender to turmeric. They also offer seasonal lemonades, steamed vanilla milk and hot chocolate. The baristas are knowledgeable and will cheerfully make custom lattes if the flavor you're looking for is not on the board.
