Katie Stokes feels like she came full circle with Edible San Diego.
Growing up in an ethnically diverse family in Southern California, Katie gives her mom credit for how she fell in love with animals, gardening and the natural world as a young girl. Her dad's work inspired curiosity and an enduring passion for reading. As her formerly rural community suburbanized, the travel bug bit hard which meant spending as much time in Europe and Latin America as she could manage, as well as first an BA, then an MA and part of a PhD in Geography, focusing on international conservation in general and how family farming fits in with that, in particular.
The mommy track was an awesome journey which led her to discover nonprofits, first as a volunteer to meet people in a new hometown and later as a community leader, when she founded what is now the San Diego Children's Discovery Museum in Escondido. Long story. Short version: her young family epitomized the need for such a place, and she discovered she had the mix of qualities it took to go from an idea and to a thriving international destination.
The secret sauce Katie discovered with the museum is the magic of a small group of people united by a service-oriented mission.
A couple years ago, when she learned that the Edible San Diego was available, she recognized a company that unifies all her interests and which seemed to need the skills she enjoyed the most.
Fast forward to today: a small-but-mighty team is reinventing Edible San Diego as the most definitive platform for wellness and community based on local and seasonal food, passionate artisans, family businesses, and an overarching commitment to working hard to create a good life because what could be more important?
